Karagal, located far to the east on an island continent, is perpetually clouded by mists and heavy volcanic ash. Both of these combine to cast the nation in almost constant darkness. Most of this volcanic ash comes from The Demon’s Maw volcano located southwest of the nation, while the rest bellows up from the Shadow’s Scar, a huge chasm that almost splits the nation in two. Cloaked for millennia in darkness, the people of Karagal have adapted to both the lack of light, and the constant ash, ever present in the air. Karagal is based upon classes, each strict and rigid, never changing. The class one is born into, is the class one will die in, as will all of it’s decendants. The classes in ascending order are thus; slaves, merchants, farmers, craftsman, Zhanshi (a member of a clan), Nobles (often a clan leader), Gonktu (similar to a duke), and finally, the emperor. Karagal’s current emperor, known as “the living shadow”, is said to be nearly 150 years old and blessed by the god of darkness himself. From the city of obsidian, the emperor rules Karagal with an iron fist and a cold calculating outlook that leaves no room for kindness or forgiveness. Seen by other nations as a land of assassins, Karagal’s many clans indeed strive for the title. Other nations are weak and to undisciplined to be seen as equals. However open war is a waste of time and resources, so Karagal is content to let the “lesser” lands hire them to eliminate their rivals. Each contract completed is both more coin in Kargals coffers, and one less enemy to worry about. Karagal’s major export is it’s high quality steel, often made into exquisite weapons by it’s master artisans. Although true “karagal” weapons, made for Zhanshi, are forbidden to be owned by lesser peoples. Any non karagal seen by a Zhanshi carrying such a weapon is considered to be under contract to die. Honor and skill are the most prized possessions of the Zhanshi, and as such, they have a deserved reputation for never betraying a contract or their word.
“You have no need to fear me. I was not hired to kill you, only your companion. He fought well, you should be proud.” -Karagal assassin of the Crimson Crane clan.
